Shark Free Marinas is an excellent program to help impact the millions of sharks that are victims every year of senseless trophy hunters and recreational sport fishermen. Many of the animals caught by these fishermen are pregnant females during the height of their breeding season. These are targeted because they are larger than the males and weigh a lot more due to being pregnant. The aim of such competitions is to bring in the largest and heaviest sharks! But sharks are THE most endangered animals on the planet, and have a very low reproductive rate! This is natures balance to its top predators. They are not designed to be preyed upon. So to keep their population in check they take from 7-12 years to reach sexual maturity. They have low birth numbers averaging around 2-20 pups to a litter. They also only reproduce once every 2 or 3 years. They were not designed to be taken in the millions. Each year 104 Million sharks are killed! 78 million ONLY for their fins! The recreational fishermen while lower impacting than the big commercial operation, are still killing millions of sharks a year.
